The Yale Daily News, founded in 1878, is the nation’s oldest college newspaper. It is published Monday through Friday during the school year in New Haven and at Yale. The News’ award-winning writers and columnists bring you national and local news, New York exclusives and politics along with the latest in sports and gossip.
The Daily News is committed to informing, inspiring, and engaging the tri-state area. It was the first U.S. daily printed in tabloid format and reached its peak circulation as one of the most widely read newspapers in the country at 2.4 million copies per day. Today it is owned by tronc, the publishing operations of the former Tribune Company, and is headquartered at 4 New York Plaza in Manhattan.
From the start, the paper was a tabloid, and it attracted readers with sensational stories of crime, murder, scandal, and violence, lurid photographs, and cartoons. It also emphasized the contributions of well-known writers, including Mark Twain, who was attracted to the “free publicity” that could be obtained in the paper.
As a result of the newspaper’s success, it was able to invest in other ventures, including radio and television stations. In 1948, the News established WPIX (channel 11 in New York City), whose call letters were based on the nickname for the newspaper, and purchased what became WFAN-FM in the 1980s. The News was also known for its excellent international coverage, which was renowned at the time.
In recent years the Daily News has exhibited moderate-to-liberal bias, often in contrast to its right-wing rival, the New York Post. It has also maintained strong coverage of the city’s many cultural events and its sports teams, especially baseball and football.
