About the New York Daily News
The newspaper was founded in 1919 as the Illustrated Daily News by Joseph Medill Patterson. It was the first tabloid paper in the United States. During its early years, it attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime and scandal and lurid photographs. It grew to become the country’s most popular newspaper, with a circulation of over 2.4 million copies a day in 1947.
In the 1920s, it became a favored source for political wrongdoing and social intrigue such as the Teapot Dome Scandal and the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to his abdication. The Daily News was also a strong supporter of the conservative populist movement in the 1930s and 1940s.
It was an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service. It also developed a large staff of photographers.
Until 1995, the Daily News was located in a building at 220 East 42nd Street near Second Avenue, designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. This building is still in use today as the world headquarters of the Associated Press. The building is also a landmark in the city of New York.
The newspaper moved to 450 West 33rd Street in 1995. It is now owned by the Chicago-based media company Tronc. It is currently the eleventh-largest-circulated newspaper in the United States, with a daily print edition of approximately 200,000 copies.
