The Daily News For UPSC Civil Services Exams

For over a century the Yale Daily News has been the leading source of news and debate on campus. It is the oldest college daily in the United States, and its alumni include William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Joseph Lieberman, Sargent Shriver, Strobe Talbott, and many others who have gone on to serve in public office or prominent positions in business, journalism, academia, law, government, and the arts.

The era of the internet and online media has put the Daily News and other printed publications in a precarious position. With fewer and fewer people paying for newspapers, circulation is declining steadily, and the Daily News has suffered more than most. The resurgence of the Donald Trump presidential campaign offered the News an opportunity to regain some ground, and it took advantage by going back to its roots with a more provocative style. Whether by giving Republican senator Ted Cruz the middle finger on the Statue of Liberty or rehashing its most famous headline: “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD”, the News sought to distinguish itself as New York City’s most outrageous newspaper.

In October 1990 the Daily News shook its foundations with a bruising five-month strike by its ten union printing workers. While the News continued to publish by hiring non-union replacement staff, the costs sucked up 44 percent of its total revenue, a major contributing factor to its massive loss.

Those were dark days, but by the end of the decade, things began to look up for the paper. In September 2017, the Tribune Publishing Company (at that time temporarily rebranded as Tronc) repurchased the Daily News for one dollar. In an effort to cut labor costs, the paper slashed its staff to 45 members—a far cry from the 400 that once plyed their trade in the News Building.

The current affairs section of the daily news covers various topics related to the environment. This includes updates on the latest global climate change and conservation efforts, as well as important policy decisions regarding the protection of biodiversity. It also offers insights into the complexities and challenges faced by humanity in preserving the planet’s natural resources. It is extremely essential for UPSC Civil Services aspirants to stay updated with the latest happenings in the field of environmental protection, so that they can answer questions on the subject during the exam.
