The Daily News is an American tabloid newspaper founded in 1919. It is based in New York City and is currently the eleventh most-circulated newspaper in the United States. At its peak circulation in 1947, the Daily News was the highest-circulating newspaper in the world. The paper is also known for its strong local news coverage, celebrity gossip, and sports coverage, and it is considered to be one of the most popular newspapers in the country.

The newspaper was originally printed in black and white until 1924, when the color version was introduced. Since then, the Daily News has expanded its reach and is now published in several cities across the United States. It is also available online through its website. The paper has won a number of awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Commentary in 1996 for E.R. Shipp’s articles on race and welfare, as well as a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography in 1998 for the photo of police beating Haitian immigrant Abner Louima.

In the late 1990s, under the leadership of new editors-in-chief (first Pete Hamill and then Debby Krenek), the Daily News developed a reputation for protecting the First Amendment as well as the rights of its residents, particularly those who were perceived not to have a voice in the city. The paper also won two Pulitzer Prizes for Distinguished Editorials, in 1996 for Mike McAlary’s piece on police brutality and in 1998 for E.R. Shipp’s piece on the resentment of the city’s black population by the city’s white majority.

During the 1920s, as the Daily News was growing in popularity, publisher Joseph Medill Patterson commissioned Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells to build a massive art deco building for the newspaper. The resulting building, 220 East 42nd Street, became an official city and national landmark, and was used as the model for the Daily Planet in the Superman franchise. The News moved to a smaller location on 450 West 33rd Street, now known as Manhattan West, in 1995.

The Daily News is known for its intense New York City news coverage and covers the Yankees, Mets, Giants, and Jets. It is also the only place to get the latest New York gossip.
