The Daily News is an American newspaper founded in 1919 and was the first tabloid newspaper in the United States. It is based in New York City and is owned by tronc, the publishing division of Tribune Company. It has been known as the city’s best source of news and is a competitor to the New York Post. The paper is renowned for its investigative journalism and focuses on the lives of working class people in Manhattan, New York City. It is a member of the News Media Alliance.

In the 1920s, the paper emphasized political wrongdoing such as the Teapot Dome scandal and social intrigue such as Wallis Simpson’s romance with King Edward VIII. It also devoted much attention to photography. The Daily News has won 11 Pulitzer Prizes, and is regarded as one of the city’s most serious newspapers and an excellent way to read the pulse of New York. Its writers and reporters have included Jimmy Breslin, Pete Hamill, Bill Gallo and David Hinckley. The newspaper has also been famous for its sports coverage, especially boxing.

After the 2015 San Bernardino shooting, the Daily News ran a headline reading “GOD ISN’T FIXING THIS” on its front page in response to Republican politicians’ tweets offering thoughts and prayers in lieu of stricter gun laws. This was a highly controversial decision and the newspaper faced significant backlash from some readers. However, the paper later retracted the headline.

The paper was the inspiration for the fictional Daily Planet in the Superman movies, with the real-life News Building serving as a model. The Daily News is a major source of local and national news, with intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads and comics. It is considered a very reliable newspaper, although it sometimes tends to be overly sensational in its reporting and may take an unfair tone towards politicians and public figures.

Its editorial stance is characterized as “flexibly centrist” with a “high-minded, if populist, legacy”. It has been historically conservative but has shifted its opinion over the years. In recent decades, it has been seen as a moderately liberal alternative to the right-wing New York Post.

In 2021, a hedge fund owned by Alden Capital acquired the News and has been reducing costs and downsizing. The company has enacted buyouts, cuts and outsourced its printing plant. As a result, several staffers left the paper over the summer. The paper has also been losing subscribers.
