The daily news is an American tabloid newspaper based in New York City. Its first edition was published on January 28, 1878, and it is the oldest continuously published newspaper in America. Today, the Daily News covers national and international news as well as politics, crime, and sports. Its editorial page has won several Pulitzer prizes, and the paper is known for its unrelenting defense of First Amendment rights. At its peak in the 1940s, the Daily News distributed 2.4 million copies a day, making it the highest-circulation newspaper in the country. The brassy pictorial tabloid was known for its brash style, and was also the first newspaper to use the Associated Press wirephoto service, and employ a host of famous columnists such as Ed Sullivan and Joseph C. Phillips, who would later become the head of CBS Radio and TV.

By the 1980s, however, the Daily News was struggling. Its parent company had yielded to union demands over rules, job numbers and overtime, and circulation had slipped below 800,000 a day—less than a third of its heyday. The paper was put up for sale, but no buyer came forward. Closing the Daily News altogether was considered, but in the end the newspaper persevered.

In the 1990s, the Daily News began to gain a reputation for its fierce stance on protecting the First Amendment and the rights of New Yorkers—particularly those who were perceived to be without a voice. The paper’s editorials won it multiple Pulitzer Prizes, including 1996 for E.R. Shipp’s pieces on race, welfare and social issues, and 1998 for Mike McAlary’s coverage of police brutality against Haitian immigrant Abner Louima.

The Daily News also gained a reputation for its tough coverage of public officials. In 1975, the paper rolled out what became its most famous headline: “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD”. This followed President Gerald Ford’s speech rejecting a bankruptcy bail-out for New York City.

Today, the Daily News is owned by Tronc, a Chicago-based media company. The paper continues to publish daily, and its website features a variety of content including videos and maps.
