A daily newspaper is a general-news publication issued once per day in a variety of broadsheet and magazine formats. In addition to news articles, daily newspapers often feature entertainment and sports coverage, classified advertising, and editorials. They may also include weather forecasts and a crossword or word puzzle.

Many large cities have daily newspapers, but smaller towns and rural areas typically have weekly or biweekly papers. Unlike daily newspapers, which are published nationwide, most weekly and biweekly newspapers are limited to their local communities and engage in community journalism.

Most daily newspapers cover national and international news, but some focus on specific topics such as business, politics, education, or sports. They usually have a front-page headline and lead story, as well as several pages of other stories, with photographs and illustrations. They usually have a public-record section that includes summaries of police and fire department calls, court dispositions, and building permits issued. Most daily newspapers have editorials, letters to the editor, and a calendar of events.

Unlike daily newspapers, most weekly newspapers have smaller staffs and tend to have a more regional focus. In addition to staff reporters and photographers, most weekly newspapers have a number of part-time contributors who are paid on a per-story basis. They also typically have a news clerk or assistant who is responsible for typing family and event news (or obituaries) as well as news releases.

Weekly newspapers typically publish on a weekly basis, usually on Wednesday or Thursday. However, some smaller weeklies are published on Sundays. In North America, the majority of weekly newspapers have a circulation that is less than 100,000.

In addition to print publications, most weeklies have online versions. Many of these have a website that offers readers the option to access the paper’s content on a mobile device, as well as additional features such as a blog and a searchable archive of past articles. Some have a digital edition that consists of a PDF of the newspaper with embedded links and video, as well as an interactive version of the newspaper.

The Yale Daily News was founded in 1878 and is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States. The Yale Daily News Historical Archive provides digitized copies of printed issues, including 140 years of full text indexed archives.

The New York Daily News has a long history of controversy, both in its coverage and in its management. The current owner of the newspaper, hedge fund Alden Global Capital, has imposed a series of cost-cutting measures that have angered employees and caused a public backlash against the company. This week, the newspaper sacked its top editor in a move that was met with widespread outrage and a call for a boycott of the paper’s advertisers. Alec Baldwin, who is a shareholder in the newspaper’s parent company, Tribune Publishing, showed solidarity with staffers by appearing on the cover of this week’s Daily News. The original home of the Daily News was the art deco, marble and granite Daily News Building on 42nd Street in Manhattan, designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood.
