Entertainment is a universal and ever-evolving form that can be adapted to many different situations and audiences. It can range from a single choice of pre-recorded product for an individual; to a banquet adapted to two; to a performance intended for thousands. Entertainment is usually associated with amusement, although it can also serve a more serious purpose such as in the case of ceremonies, religious festivals or satire. The term comes from the suffix -ment, which was added to verb stems to make nouns of result or effect (as in amazement, betterment, merriment).
